Today is World Radio Day.

World Radio Day is celebrated every year on 13 February. It was announced in 2011 by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) member states and was approved in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly. It was then endorsed as an international day.

The theme for the 2023 commemorations is “Radio and Peace.”

In its outline, UNESCO indicated that: “On World Radio Day 2023, UNESCO highlights independent radio as a pillar for conflict prevention and peace-building.”

The theme tries to motivate the media how it should responsibly report issues such as conflicts, wars and migration. It challenges the radio to focus on helping to prevent conflicts and war but to promote peace-building.

Zimbabwe shall hold this year’s commemorations this weekend in Beitbridge. Community radios shall rub shoulders with coomercial and national counterparts for the second time since their inception in 2022.
