FARMERS in Chimanimani who practice the concept of agroecology have sensationally claimed that the security of organic seeds begins at production stage.
This came out at a seed producers and ward representatives training workshop that was held by a non-profit making organisation named Towards Sustainable Use of Resources Organisation (TSURO) on December 13, 2023 at Mhakwe in Chimanimani.
One of the seed producers, Queen Manjokwiro warned that if farmers don’t do proper preparations, the seed might lose its true types.
“Seed security doesn’t start at harvesting but begins at preparation stage. The preparation include land preparation, feeding of the soil, seed selection, availability of adequate water, fencing, weeding, thinning, pest and disease management and also identification of the seed if it is true to type during harvesting so that we don’t bank a fake variety,” she said.
TSURO and other organisations that are affiliated to Participatory Ecologocial Land Use Management (PELUM) Association Zimbabwe promote the concept of agroecology which looks at maximizing yields in the field at the same time applying little damage to the ecosystem.
TSURO boasts of an organic seed bank that is located at Mhakwe and trades organic seed through its arm named Chimanimbeu.
